West Georgia is a vehicle-oriented thoroughfare, bringing people in and out of the downtown core. Still, there is much for pedestrians to see and accommodations for foot traffic increases with each new development. It is clearly evident that this is a well-planned area, part of the greater vision of putting people first when it comes to new developments.
Especially on a sunny day, the textures and architectural styles of the towers that line West Georgia are striking. Glass, concrete and steel in subtle hues draw one further into the downtown area. Looking down the streets, one sees the North Shore mountains at the end of tower-lined view corridors.
Towards the east end of West Georgia, the wonderful Roman-style library comes into view. It has been tremendously successful, most likely because its design is so different and unexpected. Completing the view at the east end is BC Place Stadium with its massive white fabric roof. After travelling a short distance, one has seen Vancouver’s past, present and future; it’s successes and works in progress; and its evolution of urban design.
