Downtown East, as delineated in this book, encompasses Gastown, Chinatown, International Village, the two stadiums and Citygate. As one of the city’s oldest communities, Chinatown contains some of Vancouver’s most historically significant structures. City officials and residents recognize Chinatown as a unique area that should be excluded from massive redevelopment.
Bordering Chinatown is International Village, a development perhaps slightly ahead of its time. A large retail complex, residential towers, a specialized shopping mall and a high-end movie theatre have been built.
Citygate, located at the east side of False Creek near Science World, is anchored by the 14-storey VanCity office tower and the SkyTrain station contained within the building. Consisting of highrise residential towers, the remainder of this development will connect with International Village as more construction takes place.
Gastown is another historic area, located between Waterfront and Chinatown. Many old buildings feature colourful retail and commercial tenants. The charm of Gastown can be attributed to brick streets, Victorian architecture, tourist boutiques, restaurants and brewpubs. All of these components come together to create a lively, colourful place that draws both tourists and residents.
