- Community Centre
This young community was formerly an industrial area and working harbour. Coal Harbour was primarily a CPR railway yard until the mid-1980s. The transformation took place in the 1990s and continues to this day with the construction of the new trade and convention centre.
Coal Harbour was subject to rigorous modern urban planning processes from the very beginning. The result is a stunning achievement: attractive residential towers, generous public areas and a seaside walk that is a natural extension of Stanley Park’s famed seawall.
The towers here are tall, slim, elegant. The lean profiles were required under the urban design process so as to not disrupt the city’s view corridors, especially down north-south streets. Concrete of previous areas has given way to glass, creating a glamorous look. Part of what makes Coal Harbour attractive is simply its newness. It will be interesting to see how time shapes this area.
