From the moment the Burrard Bridge becomes Burrard Street, towers preside. More than any other street in the downtown area, Burrard mixes architectural styles from each era of Vancouver’s history in grand fashion. Iconic buildings include the Wall Centre, the Electra and two historic churches.
The financial district’s Bentall complex at Burrard’s northern end offers significant office space in the downtown core. The original four towers exhibit a uniform style, while the more modern fifth tower incorporates cutting-edge design technology. An additional 12 floors are currently being built atop the original 22 storeys without impacting the operations of the building. Completion is slated for 2007, at which point Bentall 5 will be Vancouver’s tallest building.
The Marine Building is a special treat. Its art deco design reflects Vancouver’s marine heritage, as is evident in the building’s many marine motifs, and at the northern terminus of Burrard Street, the sails of Canada Place rise to the east and the new Shaw Tower soars to the immediate west. Looking over the water, one sees Stanley Park and the North Shore mountains - two magnificent constants in Vancouver’s scenic setting.
